How to Join an RLCraft Server (Step-by-Step)

RLCraft is the most famous hardcore modpack in Minecraft, notorious for killing new players within minutes of spawning. Built on Minecraft 1.12.2, it layers dragons, thirst, temperature, locational injuries and a skill system on top of vanilla survival to create something closer to a brutal RPG than regular Minecraft. Joining an RLCraft server takes about 10 minutes to set up. Surviving your first night takes considerably longer. This guide covers the setup part, step by step, so you can get on the SiriusMC RLCraft server and start dying with the rest of us.

What is RLCraft?

RLCraft is a modpack by Shivaxi built around one idea: make Minecraft genuinely difficult. It runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 and combines mods like Ice and Fire (dragons), Lycanites Mobs (nightmare creatures with their own equipment system) and First Aid (locational damage, so a hit to the head matters more than a hit to the leg) with survival systems for thirst and temperature. You cannot even punch trees at the start, gear has level requirements, and health does not regenerate the way you are used to. It is punishing, but that is exactly why beating it feels so good, and why playing it together on a server makes it far more fun.

What you need before you start

Do not let the 1.12.2 base fool you: RLCraft is heavier than most packs of its era because of how many creatures, structures and systems it loads. You do not need a high-end PC, but you do need a sensible amount of RAM.

  • Minecraft Java Edition account (Bedrock will not work, RLCraft is Java-only)
  • A modpack launcher: CurseForge App, Prism Launcher or ATLauncher
  • 8 GB of system RAM, with 4-6 GB allocated to the pack
  • A stable internet connection for the initial download

Step 1: Install RLCraft with the CurseForge App

RLCraft is distributed on CurseForge, so the CurseForge App is the simplest way to install it. Prism Launcher works just as well if you prefer an open-source option, the steps are nearly identical.

  1. Download the CurseForge App from curseforge.com/download/app and install it
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns your Minecraft license and pick Minecraft as your game
  3. Go to Browse Modpacks and search for "RLCraft"
  4. Click Install on the official pack by Shivaxi
  5. Wait for the download to finish before launching
Install the same RLCraft version our server runs, joining with a different version causes crashes and missing content. The exact version is listed on the SiriusMC RLCraft server page.

Step 2: Allocate the right amount of memory

RLCraft is unusual: too little RAM causes stutters and crashes, but allocating too much on 1.12.2 makes garbage collection pauses worse. The sweet spot for most PCs is 4-6 GB.

  1. In the CurseForge App, find RLCraft in your My Modpacks list
  2. Click the three-dot menu and open Settings, then the Java section
  3. Set Allocated Memory to 4096 MB, or up to 6144 MB if you have 16 GB of system RAM
  4. Close Settings and click Play

Step 3: Join the SiriusMC RLCraft server

  1. On the Minecraft title screen, click Multiplayer
  2. Click Add Server
  3. Set the server name to "SiriusMC RLCraft" (or anything you like)
  4. In Server Address, paste the IP listed on our RLCraft server page
  5. Click Done, then double-click the new entry to join

SiriusMC is free to join with no whitelist, and the server runs 24/7. PvP is disabled, so the only things trying to kill you are the ones the modpack sends, which is more than enough. Land claims with grief protection keep your base safe, and the player shop economy is a lifesaver in RLCraft: buying food, arrows or armour from other players can carry you through the early game.

A warning about your first hour

RLCraft will kill you in ways vanilla Minecraft never could. You will die to dehydration, to a random sky creature, to temperature, to a dragon you did not see, and to fall damage that breaks your legs. This is normal. Everyone dies constantly at the start, and dying on a server costs you far less than quitting does.

  • Break small rocks on the ground to get flint for your first knife, you cannot punch trees
  • Craft a canteen or drink from water sources early, thirst drains fast
  • Stay away from anything flying until you have real armour
  • Sleep is not always safe, check your surroundings first
  • Read our RLCraft survival tips guide before you spawn, it covers the full first-night routine and will save you a dozen deaths

Troubleshooting

If you cannot connect or the game will not start, these fixes solve almost every case. Still stuck? Ask in our Discord at discord.com/invite/SiriusMC and someone will help you out.

  • "Outdated client/server" or mod mismatch errors, your RLCraft version does not match the server, install the version shown on our server page
  • "Connection refused", the server may be restarting, wait 60 seconds and try again
  • Crash on launch, adjust allocated RAM to the 4-6 GB range, both too little and too much cause problems
  • Heavy stutters in game, lower render distance and particle settings, RLCraft spawns a lot of entities
  • Corrupted install, delete the pack profile in your launcher and reinstall it fresh
